Apply Description Template

Using Description Templates is effortless. There’s no additional setup or steps required by end-users. All they need to do is click Jira’s “Create” button to begin creating an issue. If the conditions defined in a Description Template are met, the Create screen will dynamically adjust, displaying preconfigured modifications tailored to your workflow.

What Happens When a Description Template is Applied?

When the conditions for a Description Template are met, the Issue Create screen will automatically reflect the template’s defined settings. For instance:

  • Predefined Field Values: Fields such as Description, Summary, or Labels can be prefilled to ensure uniformity.
  • Field Behavior Adjustments: Fields can be set to be required, read-only, or even hidden, based on the needs of your project.
  • Custom Logic: Templates may dynamically adapt to user inputs or specific project settings, applying only the modifications relevant to the context.

Practical Examples

Here are some scenarios where Description Templates make issue creation more efficient:

  • Bug Reporting: A Description Template ensures the issue includes a clear structure for the bug’s steps to reproduce, expected results, and observed behavior.
  • Task Assignment: Automatically assigns the task to the appropriate team member, prepopulates due dates, and sets labels for easier categorization.
  • Feature Requests: Provides a structured form for capturing customer feedback or feature ideas, ensuring consistency across all requests.

How to Verify If a Template is Applied?

If a Description Template is applied:

  1. Open the Create screen in Jira.
  2. Check that the predefined field values, field behaviors, or other modifications are reflected as expected.
  3. If modifications are not visible, confirm that the project, issue type, and any additional conditions match the template’s configuration.
