Permissions

Managing Project Templates in Templating.app requires specific permissions to maintain control and ensure smooth project creation processes. Below is an overview of the different permissions available and how they can be configured.

Types of Permissions

Create a Project Template

  • Who Can Create: Only Jira Administrators can create Project Templates.
  • Why: Creating a template involves setting up key configurations, workflows, and permissions, which requires admin-level control.

Apply a Project Template to Create a New Project

  • Who Can Apply by Default: Non-admin users cannot apply Project Templates by default.
  • Visibility: Users without permission will not see the option to apply Project Templates in the Template Overview.

Granting Permissions to Apply Project Templates

Admins can delegate the ability to apply Project Templates to non-admin users or groups. This can be managed within the Templating.app administration.

Steps to Grant Permissions:

Follow these steps to allow non-admin users or groups to apply Project Templates in Jira. Note that this permission applies to all available Project Templates and cannot be granted on a per-template basis.

  1. Open Templating.app Overview:
    • As a Jira administrator, navigate to Apps in the top Jira navigation.
    • Select Templating.app from the dropdown.
  2. Access Project Templates:
    • Click on Project Templates in the Templating.app interface.
  3. Go to Administration:
    • Click on Go to Administration in the Project Templates Overview.
  4. Manage Permissions:
    • In the sidebar, click on Permissions.
  5. Assign Users or Groups:
    • Use the user and group picker fields to select the users and/or groups who should be allowed to apply Project Templates.
    • Click Update Permission to save your changes.

Benefits of Granting Permissions

  • Reduces Bottlenecks: By allowing non-admin users to create projects from templates, IT teams can focus on higher-level tasks.
  • Empowers Teams: Teams can quickly spin up new projects, maintaining consistency while reducing dependency on administrators.
